Apple presented this Monday a device that had generated expectation for a long time. Called Apple Vision Pro, these are augmented reality glasses that will hit the market early next year. It's the company's first major hardware release since the introduction of the Apple Watch in 2015. Apple CEO Tim Cook said the new device "seamlessly blends the real world and the virtual world."
Augmented reality, also known as mixed reality, is a technology by which virtually created objects are superimposed on what surrounds us. This allows us to mix what is seen in the real world with virtual reality when looking through a screen.
The announcement comes a week after Meta and Lenovo announced an update to their commercially available virtual reality headsets, which do not overlay objects on a real-world view.
Meta has also invested heavily in mixed reality, but this business has experienced a sharp 54% drop in global sales last year, according to International Data Corporation.
The Apple Vision Pro will have an introductory price of US$3,499 and will be available from the beginning of 2024, first in the US.
