ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, the most popular social network in recent years, placed a purchase order for some 100,000 NVIDIA professional graphics cards, although these models have important peculiarities.
The trade war made the US government prohibit NVIDIA and AMD from selling their most powerful graphics cards to China months ago, to prevent the Asian giant from getting ahead of the technological race.
NVIDIA criticized the move, saying it would lose about $400 million. Finally, the US delayed the entry into force of the ban until September, which allowed the company to advance some shipments. China does not want to lose its opportunity and its companies have tried to anticipate the measures taken, since they have used this type of AI for their gigantic video surveillance system.
Currently there are already three large Chinese chatbots. Ernie (Baidu), Tongyi Qianwen (Alibaba) and SenseNova (SenseTime). This kind of macro-investment may be a short-term fix, but things get especially tough for China and its tech giants going forward.
